Settings → Account → ⬇ Download a backup.

What you get

A single archive containing:

• One self-contained HTML file per book, including archived books.
• A full-fidelity data file — chapter goals, sub-points, synopses, cover design and print format.
• A README.

It is deliberately not gated

Backup works on any plan, including a lapsed one, and the settings screen stays reachable even when the rest of the app is behind the paywall.

Your manuscripts are not hostage to a billing state. That is the whole point of the feature, and it is why it runs entirely in your own browser against your own data rather than through a server that could refuse.

It round-trips

The HTML archives import cleanly through Importing a manuscript: chapter titles, headings and formatting all survive.

So a backup is a genuine escape hatch, not just a pile of files you would have to retype. You can also use it to move a book between accounts.

When to take one

• Before deleting your account — deletion is not reversible.
• Before a big structural change — regenerating an outline, or a book-wide find and replace.
• On any schedule you like. It costs nothing.

Individual chapters also keep their own restore points inside the app — see Version history — but those live in your account. A backup lives on your disk.

What to watch for

• The backup is not an editable project file. It is your content, in formats you can open anywhere. Re-importing creates a new book rather than restoring over an existing one.
• Audiobook audio is not in the backup. Download the MP3s from the export wizard if you want them locally.
