Version history and find & replace

Two safety nets. Both are in the editor toolbar.

🕘 Version history

Every chapter keeps restore points, so one bad paste or one accepted AI edit can never destroy the only copy of your work.

Snapshots are taken:

• On the first change of a session — capturing the chapter as it was when you sat down.
• Periodically while you keep editing.
• Before every accepted AI edit.
• Before a find & replace.
• Before a restore — so restoring is itself undoable.

The panel lists them with a rendered preview. Restore replaces the chapter's text and, because it snapshots first, can be undone.

The newest twenty per chapter are kept.

The timeline is deliberately one step behind your live text. Restore points are the way back; the current text is in the chapter itself.

⌕ Find & replace

Book-wide search and replace, built for the job you actually have: renaming a character in chapter 30 without breaking chapter 1.

• Match case and whole word options. Whole word is what stops Mara matching Maradona.
• Live per-chapter match counts with a highlighted context snippet. Click a row to jump there.
• Replace all across the book, or Replace here in one chapter.
• Chapter titles are covered as well as their text.

Every changed chapter gets a Before replace restore point first, so a replace that went wrong is one click from being undone.

How matching works

Replacement happens inside text only. Your formatting, links, images and tables cannot be corrupted by a replace, and the counts you are shown are exactly the number of edits made.

The trade-off, stated plainly: a phrase broken across a formatting boundary — say the italic in Mara's — will not match. That is the price of never mangling markup, and it is the right way round.

You type plain text, not a regular expression. Special characters are matched literally.

What to watch for

• Find & replace does not touch archived or unopened books. It works on the book you have open.
• Restore bumps the editor, so the chapter re-seeds. Any unsaved caret position in that chapter is lost — the text is not.
• A read-only book cannot be replaced into. Nothing happens, by design.
