Manuscript Studio

Troubleshooting

The errors and surprises you are most likely to meet in Manuscript Studio, and what each one actually means.

Account and billing

"Verify your email" and nothing will generate. AI generation, exports and narration all require a confirmed address. Check spam; the sender is on your account page.

The app only shows me the pricing page. Your account has no active plan. There is no free tier — see Plans and credits. Settings stays reachable so you can still sign out or download a backup.

Some of my books are read-only. You are over your plan's book cap, usually after a downgrade. Nothing was deleted: the newest books stay editable and the rest unlock when you upgrade.

I archived a book and still cannot make a new one. Archiving does not free a slot. The cap counts every book you have made, deliberately.

Credits

"Out of credits." The monthly allotment is spent. Wait for the cycle to reset, buy a top-up pack from Settings, or move to a larger plan. Pack credits never expire and are spent after the monthly ones.

A job failed — was I charged? No. Credits are reserved before the provider is called and refunded in full on failure.

I cancelled a narration and got a partial refund. Deliberate. Passages that had already rendered stay cached and are free to reuse, so refunding them would mean narrating most of a book, cancelling, and keeping the audio.

A button shows no credit estimate. The app could not reach the backend for a quote. It will not guess a price. Try again shortly.

Writing

The outline came back generic. Nearly always the description on the premise screen. It is the brief the AI writes from — say what happens, to whom, and what is at stake.

The AI keeps contradicting my world. Pin the facts in the story codex. It is handed to every call as canon. Then run the consistency check on what is already written.

A chapter stopped mid-sentence. The model hit its output limit. Manuscript Studio refuses a truncated chapter rather than letting you accept it — regenerate, or split a very long chapter.

Find & replace missed some matches. Replacement happens inside text only, so a phrase broken across a formatting boundary — part of it italic, say — will not match. That is the trade for never corrupting your markup.

My editor changes disappeared while a job was running. Autosave is paused for a book being auto-drafted or researched, so the worker's writes are not clobbered. Avoid editing a book while a job runs on it.

Layout books

The draw button is greyed out. That page has no art brief. Write one on the page plan or in the page details, and it enables.

My line art printed as broken lines. Light greys below the minimum printable fill do not print in a black-ink interior. Coloring-book art is flattened to pure black and white for this reason; if you supplied your own artwork, check it for anti-aliased greys.

Text is cut off on the page. A fixed page cannot reflow. Use Fit text or Continue on the next page in the designer. The export reports it as a blocker, so it cannot ship unnoticed.

I deleted an illustration — do I have to pay again? No. Every image ever rendered stays in the book's art library, including versions you replaced. Put it back from the Artwork library panel.

Changing the layout lost my caption. Text still showing a {token} is treated as the previous template's placeholder and is replaced. Words you actually typed are carried across.

Publishing

The release board will not go green. It needs all three: no blockers, a spine established, and a sign-off that is not stale. Each blocker names what is wrong.

My sign-off un-ticked itself. The page count changed. A cover approved at one length is about a different book at another, so the tick does not survive it.

The bundle failed with two different page counts. The backstop. Your cover's spine was built for one length and the interior measured another — usually an edit made after signing off. Re-measure, re-check the spine, sign off again.

A check says "couldn't measure". Not a failure and not a pass. Something the app could not evaluate, most often an image whose dimensions were never recorded. Re-insert it from the art library, which re-measures on the way in.

No printing cost is shown. The app shows a cost only where the platform publishes the figures. A blank means it does not know — deliberately, rather than extrapolating a confident number for a book that may not be manufacturable.
